ABOUT US
Working in partnership with nature
Our vision
Nateva is working in partnership with nature to preserve the planet for future generations. It’s not just a sustainable tomorrow we’re building. It’s a sustainable today.
To do this, we use proven science to enable nature-based climate solutions and generate long-term value for partners, people and the planet.
Our organisation
For more than 15 years, Nateva has made a significant contribution to the global fight against climate change. Over that period, more than 30 million tonnes of carbon have been removed by the forests we manage.
To support our work, Nateva employs a large expert team in a broad range of roles – from land managers, foresters, and ecologists to GIS specialists, and regional development managers. We also create jobs in the communities we work in, while supporting a number of local businesses through our actively managed approach to developing nature-based solutions.
Nateva owns New Zealand’s largest privately-owned conservation estate of permanent forests, with 81,000 hectares of forest lands under direct management, including over 10,000 hectares of native trees. We also actively manage the carbon of over 36,000 hectares of trees for more than 6,000 local land-owner partners. Over 96% of the trees planted on Nateva’s estate are on marginal land, which is often steep, erosion-prone, and inaccessible.
Nateva’s focus is two-fold. We recognise the immediate urgency of the climate crisis, which requires rapid carbon removals at a scale large enough to make a meaningful contribution to global climate recovery. At the same time, we are also looking to the future, to support the restoration of the biodiversity within our unique environments.

Our founders
Matt Walsh and Bruce Miller are two New Zealanders who wanted to make a real and measurable contribution to the global issue of climate change.
Drawing on their extensive expertise in establishing and scaling nature-based solutions, Matt and Bruce work around the country with Nateva’s team of ecologists, technical and forestry experts and land managers.
Their focus is on ensuring the operation has the resources and capabilities to fulfil its mission to help preserve the planet, while supporting the climate change activities and aspirations of thousands of local landowners, Iwi, and communities.
Our featured people
At Nateva, our strength lies in our people. With a team of more than 70 staff working across New Zealand, we bring together scientists, land managers, ecologists, and specialists from many different fields. To give you a sense of the depth and breadth of expertise within our organisation, we’ve chosen to highlight a small selection our people here on the website. These “featured people” represent the passion and commitment that runs through our entire team, and the important roles each of our colleagues play in driving our mission forward.
Sarah Stewart
Regional Operational Manager
Sarah Stewart
Regional Operations Manager – Northern
Master of Strategic Studies, Post Grad Certificate-Applied Leadership and Management, Bachelor of Education, Diploma of Teaching
“Knowing that what our teams do every day is having a direct impact on Aotearoa’s climate change goals and ensuring that the whenua and ngahere we leave behind will be better than that which came before us are incredible motivators – giving us a sense of purpose that is far greater than ourselves.”
Sarah’s role is people-leadership – providing support, guidance and opportunities for her team, enabling them to enjoy their own roles and achieve great outcomes.
In terms of what Sarah finds most satisfying in her work, “It is always our people. The people we work with, the people who work within our forests and the people we connect with in communities. We have such incredible, enthusiastic, smart and passionate people in Nateva who are truly committed to this Kaupapa.”
Continuing to support the transition of forests into biodiverse native environments — through active management, carefully researched support and pest removal — is a key approach for Sarah and her team.
“I feel very proud to be working for Nateva and being able to contribute in some small way to making our environment better for future generations.”

“Let’s better harness the power of nature – working in partnership to make a real difference in building a better future.”
As leader of a growing organisation, Peter’s role is to enable Nateva’s multidisciplinary team to “collectively make a real difference in helping address climate change, while being thoughtful long-term stewards of the land and nature – of which we are just temporary custodians.”
Peter says one of the great rewards of his role is working with this group of talented and passionate people who care deeply about today, and the future.
“It’s exciting to be part of a movement that will see the global community taking real positive action to address the pressing challenges of climate change in sustained and substantive manner.”
“But in doing so, there’s a real need for urgency in developing new and improved nature-based solutions to address the climate crisis.”

“Nateva is committed to establishing resilient forests that reduce vulnerability to climate-related risks while promoting biodiversity conservation.”
Han’s role involves collaborating with teams across the company to plan and implement work programmes that support healthy tree outcomes in the field – from the very start of establishment to inventory, silvicultural, and fire mitigation efforts.
Collaborating with a diverse team and experiencing New Zealand’s landscapes, forests, and biodiversity through fieldwork, are some of the most fulfilling aspects of Han’s role.
“The work we’re doing is making a contribution to climate change mitigation. A collective approach – engaging diverse stakeholders to implement sustainable forest management practices – will continue to shape and influence our work.”
“I’m thrilled to be part of a team working towards a clearly defined vision: to preserve the planet for future generations.”

“Leading with nature is the way of our future and should be a priority.”
Supporting Nateva through the complex and ever-changing web of New Zealand’s land-use regulation and compliance frameworks provides Tayla with the greatest reward in her role as part of the organisation’s specialist legal team.
Tayla works closely with local government to help build relationships and ensure Nateva can achieve its environmental objectives, “particularly as legislative reform continues to reshape how land use and environmental planning are regulated.”
“With major legislative reform underway, there is real opportunity for Nateva to lead by example in how it adapts to change and engages with local government, while setting the standard for industries in New Zealand that work closely with our environment.”

Di Wang
Senior ETS Analyst
Masters Forestry Science, B. Forestry Science
“I see Nateva playing a key role in helping New Zealand, and the world, move toward a low-emissions future, while supporting biodiversity, indigenous partnerships and sustainable land use.”
Di focuses on providing assistance and support to Nateva’s participation in the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), covering around 100,000 hectares of land under carbon management.
“I find it rewarding knowing my work contributes directly to tackling climate change. There’s real impact in supporting forest carbon projects”
Di says the evolving regulatory environment – with climate commitments becoming more stringent and offsets requiring a high level of integrity – will continue to shape how forest carbon projects are managed and optimised. “Technological advancements in AI, remote sensing and data analysis will also impact how we monitor and manage our forests.”
Di sees Nateva becoming a leading voice in credible, science-aligned carbon markets. “I also hope we continue to innovate – combining data, technology, and ecological understanding to optimise carbon sequestration and deliver real, measurable climate benefits.”

Lia Weatherall
Senior Corporate Counsel
Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts.
“I want to see Nateva set the benchmark for climate solutions that deliver real benefits for people and the environment.”
As the legal landscape around nature-based climate solutions becomes increasingly complex, Lia believes staying ahead of evolving legislation will become increasingly critical for Nateva’s specialist legal team.
“As Senior Corporate Counsel, I find it most rewarding to contribute to work that blends legal rigour with strategic impact,” says Lia. “I enjoy helping the organisation navigate legal challenges in a way that’s clear, constructive, and future-focused. It’s especially satisfying when the legal frameworks I help shape enable stronger relationships – whether with iwi, commercial partners, or internal teams – and support long-term environmental outcomes.”
Lia says building those strong partnerships with iwi, communities and stakeholders, ensure projects reflect shared values and deliver lasting benefits – jobs, capability, and positive outcomes for local economies.
“If, in ten years, our landscapes are thriving and our work is creating lasting environmental value that future generations can inherit with pride, we’ll know we’ve done it right.”
